Early detection of skin cancer is life-saving. Melanoma is treatable when caught early but can be fatal when advanced. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are far more common and curable when diagnosed promptly. Periodic skin cancer screening is recommended for anyone with risk factors (fair skin, sun exposure history, family history, atypical moles, immunosuppression) and for evaluation of any new or changing skin lesion.

How skin cancer is treated at Siam Dermatology

Every patient is examined personally by Dr. Patara Voravutinon, a Diplomate of the Thai Board of Dermatology (Medical Council of Thailand license 54323). Treatment options include:

• Full-body skin examination — head-to-toe screening for suspicious lesions, especially recommended annually for higher-risk patients.
• Dermoscopy — magnified examination of suspicious lesions to differentiate benign from malignant pigmented and non-pigmented lesions.
• Skin biopsy — when a lesion is suspicious, biopsy provides definitive diagnosis. Performed in-clinic with minimal discomfort.
• Surgical excision — for confirmed skin cancers, surgical removal with appropriate margins by a dermatologic surgeon.
• Mohs surgery referral — for select facial or aggressive tumors, referral to centers offering Mohs micrographic surgery.
• Photoprotection counseling — sunscreen guidance, sun-avoidance strategies, monitoring of high-risk patients.
• Surveillance — patients with prior skin cancer or atypical moles benefit from periodic re-evaluation.

Skin cancer screening requires expertise in dermoscopy and lesion morphology that goes well beyond a general physician visit. A board-certified dermatologist examines pigmented and non-pigmented lesions with dermoscopy, identifies subtle features of early melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and decides whether biopsy is warranted. Aesthetic clinics typically do not perform medical-dermatology screening — they are not equipped or trained to identify skin cancer reliably.
