Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition causing intensely itchy, dry, and inflamed patches of skin. It commonly begins in childhood but can occur at any age, and is often associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Every patient is examined personally by Dr. Patara Voravutinon, a Diplomate of the Thai Board of Dermatology. Treatment options include:
- Topical prescription — topical corticosteroids at appropriate strengths, calcineurin inhibitors (tacrolimus, pimecrolimus), crisaborole, and emollient regimens.
- Oral medications — antihistamines for itch, short-course oral corticosteroids for flares, immunomodulators (cyclosporine, methotrexate, azathioprine) for severe disease.
- Biologic therapy — dupilumab and other biologics for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis when conventional therapy fails.
- Phototherapy — narrowband UVB for widespread or refractory disease.
- Trigger identification — allergy workup, irritant avoidance, climate/environment counseling.
- Pediatric care — age-appropriate treatment plans for infants and children.

Atopic dermatitis is more than dry skin. Severe cases require prescription immunosuppressants or biologics that must be monitored by a board-certified dermatologist. Aesthetic clinics typically only offer surface-level moisturizers and over-the-counter recommendations and cannot prescribe or monitor the systemic treatments often needed.
